California is the America that we are proud for the world to see. The Los Angeles Times is the voice of California.
The pitch to the new owner was to transform the LA Times into the voice of the Golden State - broadcasting to the nation and world the spirit, optimism, and ideas that California is known and admired for.
I’m a news junkie, and so I took the opportunity to design a journalistic website that I would want to read and subscribe to: clearly organized, optimized for reading with beautiful and highly legible text, ample space for gorgeous imagery and video, and greater focus on the technology, environmentalism, entertainment, and the food and culture that defines California.

Podcasts are a compelling storytelling medium, creating connection and loyalty between the LA Times and its audience. Our recommendation was to prioritize LA Times-produced podcasts and include a custom player within the experience.
Responding to what LA Times subscribers told us, we added community news along side regional and state news – easily localized through a simple area code input.
In Hollywood it’s box office results, not stock prices, that are tracked and scrutinized on a daily basis. We opted to present box office data right on the home page.
